Level 1 HPR Certification

Copeland Felts

What goes up, must come down.
Hello all, I am currently seeking to get involved with a local rocketry club and attempt my level 1 certification this summer! Are there any members willing and/or able to assist me in the certification process? I believe I need 2 NAR members in good standing with one person being level 1 certified to judge my attempt OR a single level 2 certified NAR member in good standing. Thanks!

We generally have people available to do certifications for Levels 1 and 2 at every launch we hold at Rembert/Camden. Just let me know about a week before the launch and we will make sure we have a cert team available.

Let me clarify...I can witness Level 3's in both organizations but I think I can only certify somebody in NAR. I'm trying to look up the requirements for Tripoli as I think you need a TAP for a cert flight

NAR only needs 1 L2 or L3 NAR member or 2 NAR members, one of which is already L1.
Tripoli only a Prefect or TAP member can certify under Tripoli rules. I am a TAP and L3 in both organizations. Chuck Haislip attends all launches and he is a Prefect.

I just completed building a Eradicator rocket from Sirus Rockety and was told it could be used for a Level 1 certification. I was hoping to do this by attending the April 10-11 Launch dates. I would be grateful for anyone to let me know exactly the procedures and steps I will need to accomplish this. Thank you very much.

What are your questions? We have a number of members that can assist.

So I know I need to fill out the application and I guess bring it with me on April 10-11th. So here is a list of questions.
1. Does it matter which day I choose. (April 10th or 11th)
2. I joined the NAR but would also like to join the local club. I did not see a application for that.
3. As far as my rocket. It is the "Eradicator" by Sirius. It said it could be used for a Level 1 cert. Is this true?
4. There are several size motors listed for this particular rocket. Is there a certain power needed to be used so I can prepare to have that on hand?
5. I am already starting a new build and was hoping to find someone to mentor me with some building techniques for this one. Other than what I watch on You Tube.

I think that about covers it. If you can suggest a member that has time to talk over some of this, that would be great. I am more of a talk on the phone or in person kind of guy.

Thank you for you time.

No.

You can join on the field.

3. As far as my rocket. It is the "Eradicator" by Sirius. It said it could be used for a Level 1 cert. Is this true?
It should be fine with a low thrust H or I.

4. There are several size motors listed for this particular rocket. Is there a certain power needed to be used so I can prepare to have that on hand?
Email Ken Allen of Performance Hobbies and he can get you a motor. Let me know if he can’t.

5. I am already starting a new build and was hoping to find someone to mentor me with some building techniques for this one. Other than what I watch on You Tube.
Do a build thread on our website and I will be more than glad to answer questions and follow it.

I would go to the NAR website and look up Level 1 certification process. This should help you to understand the process overview and or any forms you need. Also the best resource I found is “ Modern High-Power Rocketry 2”. It should take you from 1 to level 3. All the Best, Jim

Hey Jim,
So I have familiarized myself with everything I need to know about the certification process from both the NAR website and also bought the book you recommended. I have decided to do my Level 1 on a different rocket than I had originally planned for numerous reasons. I will still fly it but have decided the "Eradicator" is not the best choice for a successful certification flight. I also have contacted Ken from Performance rockets/hobbies (your vendor) to make sure he will have the motors I will need. If all goes well I am going to try for both Level 1 and 2 over that weekend (April 10th-11th) I will also be prepared to take the written test as well and will have both my application forms filled out and will have my NAR card with me.
Please let me know if there is anything I missed. I would be grateful.

I was checking the L2 certification procedure for something else when I found out that NAR requires that an individual must currently hold a HPR Level 1 certification, as identified on their NAR Membership Card before an L2 attempt. This can be found in #4 under Minimum Requirements on https://www.nar.org/high-power-rocketry-info/level-2-hpr-certification/

So it seems you will not be able to do both L1 and L2 in one weekend.

I'm with the Lenior Rhyne Rocketry team at Lenior rhyne university. we have several members wishing to pursue there lv1 and one trying for lv2. will there be TAPs on hand on the 13th and 14 launches this weekend nov 2021?

Hello,

I am the Prefect and will be present. I can sign level 1 and 2. The requirement for TRA 1 and 2 is for a Prefect, TRA Director, or TAP Member to be present and see the flight.
